Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a type of hair transplantation performed by taking individual hair follicles from your skin and moving them to another part of your body where the hair is sparse or not. FUE has become more popular than the follicular unit transplantation (FUT) procedure, which leads to the appearance of “hair plugs”.
Surgeons use micro-staples to remove single follicles and move them, leaving almost no signs of extraction.
Hair transplanted to a new part of your body usually starts to grow back in about 3 to 4 months.
You can expect about 90 to 98 percent of the transplanted hair to regrow.
The FUE Procedure Works like This:
- Your surgeon will shave the hair in the area where the roots will be taken, as well as the area to be transplanted.
- They will remove the follicles from your skin using a micro-piercing instrument.
- Your surgeon will then make a series of small incisions with a needle or other small, sharp instrument and insert them into the removed follicles.
- They will place the follicles in the incisions.
- Your surgeon will clean and bandage the area to heal.
Are There Any Risks Or Side Effects?
In FUE hair transplantation, there are no scars except for small white spots where the roots are taken. These may disappear over time.See your doctor if you notice any of the following rare side effects:
- Signs of infection
- The drain or crust where the surgery was done
- Pain or swelling around the surgical site
- Bleeding from the surgical site
- Numbness or tingling near the surgical site

Some things you may need to do before having a FUE hair transplant:
- Do not smoke at least one day before surgery.
- Do not drink alcohol at least 3 days before the surgery.
- Do not take aspirin and blood thinners about 1 week before the surgery.
- Do not take any vitamin and nutritional supplements 2 weeks before the surgery.
- Avoid taking antidepressants about 2 weeks before surgery.
- Do not cut your hair before surgery.
- Massage your scalp for 10 to 30 minutes every day for a few weeks to increase blood flow to your scalp.
Get an electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood tests before surgery.

What to Expect After FUE Hair Transplant?
Recovery from FUE is fast. You may feel some swelling or discomfort for about 3 days.Here are some aftercare instructions your doctor can give you:
- Do not wash your hair or take a shower for at least 2 days.
- Use gentle, unscented shampoos for a few weeks after you start washing your hair.
- Take a few days off from work to speed recovery.
- Do not comb or brush your new hair for at least 3 weeks.
- Do not wear hats, caps, or other clothing that fits over your head until your doctor says it’s okay.
- Do not engage in strenuous physical activity for at least a week.

Some hairs may fall out during the healing process. This is normal. You will probably start to see a difference after 3 to 4 months.Depending on the health of your transplanted hair, your hair may not grow as thick as expected.
